Importing saved video from an HDV camera
Use this procedure to import saved video from an attached HD camera that records to tape. The camera must be connected to the computer by a FireWire (1394) cable.
To import saved video from an HDV camera:
1 Ensure that your camera is in the correct mode to play back saved video. For more information, check the documentation for your camera.
Tip: Choose the mode that allows you to review or play back video. The mode name varies depending on the brand of the HDV camera.
2 Connect the camera to your computer using a FireWire cable.
Note: If you have not already chosen an application to use with the camera, you are prompted to do so. Select Media Import and click OK.
If Media Import is open on your computer, continue with the next step.
If Media Import is not open, it opens and the Video Import Home page appears. Skip to step 4.
3 On the Media Import Home page, click Video.
4 On the Video Import Home page, in the Device drop-down list, select the HDV camera.
5 Under Capture Settings, select the format in which to save the video recording. Choose from the following options:
n Hi Def 1440x1080: Imports full-size HD video with optimal quality. This file format creates large video files. (Only available if your camera is in HD mode.)
n AVI DV Format: Imports full-size DV video with optimal quality. This file format creates large video files. (Only available if your camera is in DV mode.)
n MPEG-2 Format: Imports full-size video using MPEG-2 compression. The MPEG-2 compression format maintains a high video/audio quality while allowing smaller file sizes. (Only available if your camera is in DV mode.)
6 In the Save files to box, select the folder in which you want to save the media files.
7 In the Rename Files text box, enter a name for the new video file.
Media Import uses the text you enter to name the new video file. If a file with this name already exists in the selected location, Media Import appends a five-digit number to the name (for example, “Imported Videos 00001”).
8 To import all of the video on the tape, click Capture Entire Tape.
Media Import copies the video to your hard disk. While it copies the video, Media Import shows the amount of video copied, in hours, minutes and seconds, and indicates how much disk space is available on your hard disk, in GB. When the import is complete, a thumbnail of the new video file appears in your Import Bin.
9 To import a section of video, follow these steps:
a Use the playback controls in the Media Import window to go to the beginning of the section of the recorded video that you want to import.
b Click Play.
The HDV camera begins playing the recorded video.
c To start importing video, click Capture Now.
d When you reach the end of the section of video you want to import, click Stop.
10 To import a section of video of spanning an exact length of time, follow these steps:
a Use the playback controls in the Media Import window to go to the beginning of the section of the recorded video that you want to import.
b Select the Set Capture Length checkbox and use the controls to set the capture time.
c Cick Capture Now.
